14-year-old wins National Volunteer Prize

14-year-old Penelope Lea became Wednesday’s youngest winner of the National Volunteer Prize.

She received the award for her involvement in the environmental movement.

Already as an eleven-year-old, Lea was elected to the Board of the Children and Youth Organization, the Environment Agency, and since then she has shown an undaunted commitment to the environment and climate.

Lea appealed to the UN’s climate negotiations in Bonn, during Arendalsuka, on television, and to environmental agencies, and she still leads
the Children’s Climate Panel.

On Wednesday, the 14 year old received the National Volunteer Prize, which for the 24th time was given to a person or organization that has contributed to giving the volunteer a face and has promoted voluntary engagement.

“The work of the winner is about all of us and is a matter of the whole way we live our lives, which many characterize as the most important issue of our time,’’ stated the jury. The prize consisted of 50,000 kroner.
