World Championships history

The IBU World Championships Biathlon were held for the first time in 1958 in Saalfelden, Austria, and were only open to men. These first championships comprised an individual 20 km event (standard event) and an unofficial relay. It was not until 1984 that separate championships were arranged for women, while World Championships for both genders have been organised since 1989.

To start with, large-bore rifles were used, and competitors shot at the targets from a distance of 150 metres. Small-bore rifles were introduced in 1978, at the same time as the distance to the targets was reduced to 50 metres. READ MORE about Learn more about he IBU World Championships history!
