Lowest marriage figures in 25 years in Norway
We had to go all the way back to 1994 to find a lower annual number of marriages in Norway than those of last year.
Exactly 20,949 couples married in this country last year. You would have to go back to 1994 – a time with 975,000 fewer inhabitants – to find the lowest number of marriages, which was then 19,999. Figures from Statistics Norway reveal this.
In 2018, nearly 1,200 fewer people were married than in the previous year. There was a decline in the number of marriages entered into in all counties, except in Vestfold. With 9,500 divorced and 10,600 separations, there were 300 fewer divorces than in 2017, while the number of separations increased somewhat.
Most women
The number of same-sex married couples increased from 250 in 2013, to 330 in 2017, and was at the same level as in 2018. 58 per cent of those marriages were between women. The previous year, this proportion was 64 per cent.
The number of separations among same-sex couples increases, especially in marriages between women. In 2018, 88 couples in this group applied for separation. It is the largest number since the Marriage Act was introduced. Furthermore, there were 55 divorces in this group.
In the case of marriages between men, 53 sought separation, and 25 were divorced.
