20 percent more young people applying for Agricultural trades

20 percent more people have Agricultural trades as their first choice in 2016 than it was in 2015. Forest Sciences is the most popular agricultural related school discipline, according to figures from the Universities and Colleges Admission.
– These are exciting figures showing that young people believe in a future as agriculture. Agriculture and Food Jon Georg Dale said competition for places of study contributes to highly motivated students, and it will give the program more prestige.

According NUCAS the number of applicants with agriculture-related subjects are increased from 385 applicants in 2015 to 461 applicants in 2016.

This year, 614 students have been offered a place by agricultural studies.
Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) is offering all agricultural subjects, with the exception of livestock science, is completely full. The most popular program is forest sciences, which for the second year in a row have long waiting lists.

Also in secondary education interest in Agricultural trades has been increased. This year there are 15 percent more applicants for program “Agriculture and Fishing” in the county schools than last year.
– The industry needs more young people with high skills and dedication for agriculture.

Dale said Interest, skills, theoretical knowledge and agricultural education is important to further development in the industry.
