Norwegian 15 year olds are better in science, maths and reading compared to three years ago, according to the year’s PISA rankings

Norway is now above the OECD average in all three disciplines, shows the international survey.
There has been progress since the last test in 2012 when Norway was below average in both maths and science, and only above average in reading.
Over three years, Norwegian 15-year olds have increased by three points in science, five points in reading and one point in maths.
24 countries are above the OECD average in all three disciplines, and Norway is just inside this group being number 24, in front of countries like Sweden, USA, France, Russia and Spain.
Singapore, Japan, Estonia, Chinese Tapei (Taiwan) and Finland tops the rankings, which tests 15-year-olds in 72 countries and territories. Norway is the third best Nordic country after Finland (5th place) and Denmark (21st place).
– On the right track
– These are indications that we are on the right path. We must thank the teachers and principals for the important work they do, says Minister Torbjørn Røe Isaksen.
In mathematics, Norway is among the countries with the greatest progress since the previous PISA survey in 2012. In science, the results have been stable since 2009, but there is a slight improvement compared to 2006.
The Norwegian students distinguish themselves when it comes to reading. Here are the 15 year olds in Norway among the best in the entire OECD.
– A good and systematic work on reading over time gives good results, said director Hege Nilssen in Secondary Education.
