The government was before Christmas instructed to review the possibility of an official Norwegian education for imams and other religious leaders. The parliamentary majority believes not much has been done and want to speed up the process.

– This was an important breakthrough in the integration settlement,  Liberal André N. Skjelstad says.
– It is important that the religious leaders who serve in the Norwegian communities, have the opportunity to get their education in Norway and in the main get their religious education in Norway , so that they know Norwegian references and Norwegian values, he points out.

Left has for many years campaigned for a Norwegian education for religious leaders from other denominations than the Christians. During the negotiations on the integration settlement  the party got support for the proposal, but since then, little has changed.
The government’s integration report says nothing specific about a Norwegian imam education, and Ap, SV, SP and Left have criticized this in the report of the Local Government Committee that the parliament is to discuss on this Thursday.
