The number of pupils completing primary school without grades in more than half of the subjects, have doubled since 2009. Disturbing, says the leader of the union.

Last year 2665 students were standing “without school points,” meaning that they lacked a grade in more than half of the subjects, writes Aftenposten. This corresponds to 4.2 percent of departing students in 10th grade. In 2009, the share was 2.2 percent, totaling 1,352 students.

There may be several reasons why students end up without grades in eight or more subjects and thus are left without school points. According to Statistics Norway, the figures give limited ability to distinguish between the reasons why not every student gets their grades. The current students do not lose the right to upper secondary education, but are guaranteed this under exceptional circumstances.

Education Association’s leader, Steffen Handal says the doubling in recent years is alarming.
– This is not a development we want. I would therefore encourage school officials to investigate what lies behind this.
