Still possible to be a teacher without a 4 in mathematics

The government will require a minimum grade 4 from candidates this autumn in order to be accepted at the  country’s teacher training colleges, However, those who are training as teachers by taking the Practical Pedagogical Education route (PPU), escapes this requirement.

For those who want to teach in schools, but fail the new math requirement, there is still a back door.

Whilst the fence has been raised higher this autumn for those going into the country’s primary and lecturers’ teacher training program, there is still no minimum maths grade for those training to teach through the Practical Pedagogical Education program(PPU), a course that is offered at most of universities and colleges.

PPU is a one-year education program offered to applicants who have completed at least one bachelor’s degree already.  Candidates will then be qualified to work in the schools from 5th grade and up.

Norwegian Lecturers association reacted to the unequal requirements. – In principle, there should be the same high standard and demands of all who teach. It is unfair if those going into full teacher education programs have to meet higher requirements than those who will be training through the PPU,  said leader Rita Helgesen to the news agency NTB.

  1. Hi good day! I am currently leaving outside norway, but I was leaving in your country for 2 years before (2016-2018). I can speak good norwegian language and understand a bit more. Now, my question is, is it possible for me to apply as a teacher or undergo the training to teach through the Practical Pedagogical Education program(PPU)? I graduated my Bachelor in Elementary Education at my home town which is Philippines. Thank you and looking forward to here from you soon!
