From next year Norwegian universities will begin to remove investments from funds that are linked to fossil fuels.

In 2017, the University of Oslo (UiO), NTNU, and the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), agreed to remove oil, coal and gas from their investments in greener alternatives, said NRK news.

According to The Future in our hands, calculations are at 183 million.

– Universities are one of the most sustainable institutions we have in a democratic society.

There must, therefore, be a similarity with funds that come to the university and the funds we represent, said Hans Jørgen Stang, Director of Administration foundation for funds and endowments, UNIFOR, to NRK.

The aim is an entirely fossil-free investment within five years. Future in our hands has called this is a milestone in environmental history.

– The main thing is that the leading knowledge institutions now send a crystal clear signal that they take responsibility for the environment, says Christoffer R. Klyve, acting manager of the future in our hands.

UNIFOR have total assets of about two billion and manages money going to research.

They see it as a strategic decision to pull out of all the investments that harm the environment in the long term.
