A new campaign has been launched to get Norwegians to become more aware of the symptoms of strokes.
“Do you have trouble talking clearly, smiling or raising your hands over your head?

Call 113, “reads the message from the Health Directorate of the campaign that was launched Friday.

– Every second counts following a stroke. Do not be afraid to call 113 if you have any doubts.

It is their job to consider such requests. Call either 113 too much rather than too little, says Health Director Bjorn Guldvog.

Each year about 12,000 Norwegians are affected strokes. Experiences from Norway and abroad show that patients delay in receiving treatment because the person themselves or their relatives do not recognize the symptoms and wait too long to contact health services.

If the stroke survivors receive swift assessment and treatment, the possibilities are larger to avoid permanent damage.

The disease is the third leading cause of death in this country and the most common cause of severe disability and long-term residential care.

Strokes can affect both young and old, but the risk increases with age. Three out of four who get strokes, are over 70.
