Grocer in the centre of Stavanger open until midnight

Most groceries in Norway are open from 7 or 8 am to 9-11 pm at night on weekdays, shorter on Saturdays and are closed on Sundays, at least in the urban areas. Now Stavanger has it first grocer that stays open to midnight on Monday through Saturday. A few are open on Sundays but are limited in space (Brustadbuer).

The Grocery store Coop Extra in Klubbgata in Stavanger is now open from 6 am to midnight, six days a week, and has been doing that since it was converted from a Coop Prix in September.

– We wish to be available to our customers, Shop Manager, Petya Yancheva (36), smiles.

– We experience that there are more customers between 6 and 7, and between 10 pm and midnight every day. Before, we were at work at 6 am to stock the shelves with bread and such anyway, so the difference is not that great for us, Yancheva elaborates.

– That’s what is great about it, you virtually don’t need to look at the clock anymore to decide when to shop, the shopkeeper expands.

The shop is mainly based on self-service checkout but has one regular cash point still. The checkouts still only offer Norwegian as a language but there is staff in attendance to offer support.

No real competition

There are no other grocery stores in Stavanger that are open for as long as the outlet in Klubbgata. Some petrol stations are open 24/7 but have stiff prices and limited offer. Low alcohol beverages (beer and the like) are also limited by local regulations.

– This store is located near a traffic hub, and then it’s natural to have long opening hours so customers on the go can buy what they need for breakfast, lunch or supper, says Press Contact in Coop, Harald Kristiansen. Not least for those affected by the peak hour fees in the region.

On a national basis in Norway, there are roughly twenty Coop stores with similar opening hours and also some from the competing chains.

– It concerns the customer base and where the stores are located, Kristiansen rounds off.
