A marked increase in demand for housing abroad

Norwegians demand for holiday homes abroad has more than tripled in two years, writes Finansavisen. Stiff prices along the Norwegian coast are highlighted as a cause for this demand in housing abroad.

Today, there are around 90,000 Norwegian households who say they own housing abroad. This according to Prognosesenteret, a company specializing in analysis of the European real estate markets.

Partner in the Prognosis Center, Bjørn-Erik Øye, says to Finansavisen that for the first time there is a situation where the interest for buying housing abroad has exceeded the demand in Norway. The increase in demand began in the spring of 2016, says Øye.

– At that time, 0.9 per cent stated that they had thoughts of buying a place abroad within the next three years. Now, in the spring of 2018, it has risen to 3.4 per cent. That is equal to about 80,000 households. It is thus way more than three times as many that are planning to buy a holiday home abroad now than it was only two years ago, he tells the newspaper.

Prices on the way up again

He is supported by CEO Agnar D. Carlsen in Norsk Megling International, who says the difference from last year is very big. Of Carlsen’s customers, approximately 60 per cent buy properties in Spain. He believes that the real estate market in southern Europe has generally increased again.

– Prices are on the way up again after the financial crisis. Especially in Spain, but also in France and Italy, he says.
