One in ten pregnant women drink during pregnancy, according to a new survey. Women with higher education are most liberal to official recommendation on total abstinence.

Nine out of ten women completely stopped drinking when they discovered that they were pregnant, writes Aftenposten. The survey was conducted by TNS Gallup for Actis, which is drug a rehabilitation cooperative organization.

– We see that many are not aware of the potential harm, and I think we might have been too careful to tell women about the seriousness, says General Secretary Mina Gerhardsen in Actis.
Women under 30 and those with more than four years of higher education are most open to drink during pregnancy. The survey also shows that 13 percent of the population thinks it is okay for pregnant women to have a glass of wine for dinner.

The Swedish professor and obstetrician Agnes Wold says that even though the government may recommend total abstinence, one can not say that you risk injury by a negligible alcohol intake.

– There are many women in Sweden who are absolutely terrified and anxious because they have been drinking in early pregnancy. I mean that is a serious side effect of this advice, she said.
