Absence of subcutaneous fat reduces the risk of several common types of cancers in Norway. These types include pancreatic cancer, ovarian cancer and bone marrow cancer.

An independent working group of 21 international experts have gone through more than a thousand scientific studies and have now found a connection between obesity and eight more cancer types in various organs  : Cancer of the stomach, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, ovaries, thyroid, meninges and bone marrow.

The researchers also confirmed previous findings showing that a healthy body weight reduces the risk of colorectal cancer, kidney cancer, esophagus cancer, certain types of cancer of the uterus and breast cancer for women who have undergone menopause.

The study is published in the respected journal The New England Journal of Medicine.
