Sleep expert Bjorn Bjorvatn says the only thing that helps against fatigue is having good practices all week, adding that making up for lost sleep by sleeping late at the weekends only makes it worse.

– If you want to become less tired, there is only one real cure that will help you. That is to get a healthy routine in place for  every day of the week,  Bjørn Bjorvatn, director of the Norwegian Center service for sleep disorders, explains to NRK news.

According to the sleep expert, things only get worse if you sleep late on weekends.
– It is wise to keep to the same circadian rhythm for all the days of the week, especially if you experience sleep problems, he said.

Magne Tvinnereim, a specialist in sleep disorders at Spiro Medical, says it’s better to take a little nap during the day.

– Are you fit and healthy, we recommend  that you sleep between 15 to 30 minutes in the day at a maximum. If you sleep longer, you will dalay the onset of sleep time at night and lose the effect of sleep.

If you are very tired, you should consider going to bed even earlier than you normally do, he continues.

I read about this issue in 1985 in news week magazine. Before I read the article I used to worry on how I will make up for lost sleep. The article was a study about lost sleep and it claimed that even if you have lost about twenty hours of sleep; it doesn’t mean that you must sleep for twenty or ten hours to compensate it. Our brain has a mechanism of compensating the lost hours of sleep in a satisfying way and there is no need to worry about how to make up for long hours of sleep that you lost. So, I totally agree with this article. Ever since I read that article I never had any sleep disorder and I never worried for lost sleep.
