To avoid ‘Sudden infant death syndrome’ (SIDS) or ‘Crib/Cot death’ among infants, children should sleep in the same room as their parents in the first year, according to a US study.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) are still decided that infants should sleep on their backs, on a spacious surface without toys or blankets nearby.

Policy was changed in the 90s. Since then, cases of SIDS have decreased by 50 percent.

The new rules for AAP, which have changed since the last report in 2011, say that infants should sleep in the same room as their parents until they are six months to a year old, though not in the same bed.

SIDS is the most common cause of death among infants. Many are strangled by bedding, toys, or squashed between sofa cushions. Others die of overheating or stop breathing for no apparent reason.

‘Parents should never place your baby on a sofa or a soft chair, either alone or with another person. We know that these surfaces are extremely dangerous’, said Rachel Moon of AAP.
