The number of workers employed in the petroleum industry has fallen by 24,800 in the period from 2015 to 2017 shows new figures from Statistics Norway (SSB).

By 2015, 195,000 people were employed in the Norwegian oil industry. By 2017, this figure had dropped to 170,200, a decline of 24,800 people, Sysla wrote.

According to SSB, this means that total employment attributable to the petroleum industry has fallen from 7.1% in 2015 to 6.1% in 2017 of all employed in Norway.

According to the report from SSB, demand from the petroleum industry has fallen, and in 2017 total resource consumption in the petroleum industry was approximately 9% of mainland GDP

“It is expected that demand from the petroleum industry will remain at this level until 2021,” wrote SSB.
