Bulldozer Trump could destroy Paris Agreement

Donald Trump could destroy the Paris Agreement and international efforts to combat climate change, warns researcher.

On Friday the Paris Agreement will formally be in force, after surprisingly swift processing and approval by governments and politicians around the world.

Delegates from nearly 200 countries will meet next week in Morocco for the first major climate conference after the summit in Paris, to discuss the implementations of the agreement.

However, the agreement may have a very difficult start – and perhaps a short life – if Trump wins the presidential election, since the Morocco negotiations will have barely just begun.

– The Paris Agreement is a fragile edifice, and Trump is a bulldozer that can tear the structure down, says Lead Researcher Steffen Kallbekken at CICERO (Center for climate change).

– Fraud and “bullshit”

Trump has called the research on climate change “bullshit”, “fraud” and something China has devised in order to affect the US economy.

If he becomes president, he has promised to remove US environmental measures introduced by Barack Obama. He will immediately stop all US support for UN efforts to combat global warming.

At an oil conference earlier this year he also promised to repeal the climate agreement from Paris. How he would actually do this is unclear, but he would definitely weaken the effect of the agreement.

– Should Trump be the next US President, it could drastically affect the international effort for climate change, states Kallbekken.

You mean pragmatic realist Trump may finally bring some commonsense to bear on this subject.
