Environment Directorate downsizes with over 40-years because of cuts in the operating budget next year.

– Together with the unions, we have dealt with how downsizing will be implemented.

Now we are awaiting the budget adopted in Parliament before Christmas and the final approval letter from the Ministry, said director Ellen Hambro in Environment Directorate to Adresseavisen.

The state budget of Environment Directorate been cut for 30 million.

She hopes most of the redundancies can be taken through voluntary arrangements, but said that layoffs cannot be avoided. Environment Directorate has around 700 employees at 350 in Oslo, 250 in Trondheim and around one hundred staff at the local offices of the Norwegian Nature Inspectorate (SNO).

In addition every agency is required to identify and cut as much as possible of existing bureaucratic acts, which means three million in the Environment Directorate.

– Overall, it is estimated a reduction of 60 positions in the Environment Directorate this year and next year. One consequence is that we get a reduced ability to fulfill our tasks, says Hambro.
