Fewer and fewer ATMs

Norwegians take out less and less cash from ATMs and when making a purchase of goods, and the number of ATMs are declining.

This past year, DNB has gone from having 270 ATMs to 188, writes newspaper Klassekampen. In 2008, there were 2283 ATMs in Norway, an all-time high. Now the number has fallen to 1950 according to a summary of Norges Bank.

– The figures are clear and evident, most people do not use cash in everyday life anymore.

We adapt to customer behavior, says information director at DNB, Even Westerveld.

After the New Year, the bank will be introducing a fee of 10 kroner to withdraw money from the bank’s ATMs, even to DNB customers. Today this is free.

Even though you can also withdraw cash in stores, this is also seldom used. In 2015, Norwegians withdrew a total of NOK 90 million from ATMs, and only NOK 19 million from shops in connection with purchases.

  1. That’s because the banking system wants to go cashless and people are too stupid to know what that will mean for them
