A fire at a fish farm in Måsøy in Finnmark led to between 1,000 and 10,000 fish escaping.

The fire occurred at Cermaq’s facility in Ryggefjorden night to Tuesday, the company announced in a press release.

Rings, plates and bird nets attached to the cage were damaged in the fire.

“It is too early to conclude what was the cause of the fire,” says regional director Gunnar Gudmundson to IntraFish.

“But we suspect something was wrong with some electronics,” he says.

There were about 162,000 fish in the cage when the fire broke out. The escaped fish are about 500 grams, untreated and fresh.

The fire was detected quickly by the employees at the facility, so that extinguishing and tightening measures could be implemented immediately. No person was injured in the fire.

The Directorate of Fisheries has been notified of the incident.
