Livestock Company Nekst received a license to build the world’s largest salmon farm for salmon fingerlings on land outside Førde.
Company Nekst has received on Wednesday a license to build a fish farm the size of 12 football fields of land, according to Dagens Næringsliv.
– This is a long-term industrial and sustainable solution for the Norwegian aquaculture industry, says founder and CEO of Nekst, Kjell Audun Aasen.
Typically, salmon fingerlings are between 60 and 200 grams, but Nekst plan to wait until they have become a kilo. Thus one can avoid lice problems to a larger degree. The facility is licensed to produce up to 20 million salmon fingerlings up to a kilogram.
– When the fish grow larger on land, there is less time at sea. The salmon industry will grow and increase production, this measure can be implemented without significant environmental impacts, says Jan Heggheim, which is the county director of industry and culture in Sogn og Fjordane and is granting the concession.
The aim is that the plant run by Nekst, which is estimated to cost between 2 and 2.5 billion kroner, will start operations in 2019.
