The Crown Prince spoke to the oil magnates at ONS

Crown Prince Haakon of Norway opened the oil and energy fair Offshore Northern Seas (ONS) in Stavanger on Monday. He used the opportunity to talk about climate change.

– The threat of global warming affects all industries – and perhaps especially the energy sector. The world’s population is growing, and thus the need for energy, the Crown Prince stated in his speech.

He noted that the industry has been through difficult times and that it has managed to reduce costs and increase efficiency.

– A green energy future is both a long-term goal and transition. In this transition, your industry plays an important role. Your knowledge, expertise and experience are the keys to developing better solutions. Our common future is largely influenced by your decisions, the Crown Prince continued in his speech.

At the same time as the ONS fair opened on Monday, Equinor brought news about the «Johan Sverdrup» oil field in the North Sea. Current calculations show that the field is both cheaper to build out and that it contains more oil than previously estimated.

Day to remember

– This is a red-letter day for Norway. Johan Sverdrup is Norway’s largest industrial project and is estimated to yield more than NOK 900 billion in revenues to the Norwegian state during its lifespan. The development of the field has meant a lot for the supplier industry in a difficult period, creating jobs and created major ripple effects across the country. First and second building stages can provide as much as 150,000 man-years in the period leading up to 2025, says Minister of Petroleum and Energy, Terje Søviknes (Progress Party).

The plans for the development of the second phase of the Johan Sverdrup field were handed over to Søviknes from Equinor (Statoil) during the opening day of the fair.

ONS (Offshore Northern Seas) is organised bi-annually in Stavanger and attracts many thousands of visitors and exhibitors from all over the world.
