The goal of zero discharge of environmentally hazardous chemicals on the Norwegian continental shelf is further away than previously expected, concludes Environment Directorate. At the same time, the discharge of dispersed oil is also increasing.

Since 2010, discharge of dispersed oil and naturally occurring pollutants has increased.

Environment Directorate is considering to more rigid requirements for the operators on the Norwegian continental shelf which can help reduce the discharges.

At the same time, the directorate indicates that the goal of zero discharge of hazardous chemicals is further away than it was in 2010.

– The Environmental Directorate will monitor the operators’ efforts to replace environmentally hazardous chemicals with more environmentally friendly alternatives, however we see that it will be difficult to achieve the goal of zero discharge, says Department Signe Nåmdal from The Environment Directorate.
