The industry promises to cut sugar, salt and fat in food

Businesses and health authorities have signed an agreement on a concrete reduction of Norwegians’ consumption of sugar, fat and salt.
The intake of added sugars in food is to be reduced by 12.5 per cent over five years. Salt intake will be reduced by 20 percent.

The intake of saturated fat will be reduced by 7 percent during the next year, and by 29 percent in the longer term.

– This will provide healthier food in refrigerators and kitchen cabinets for most people, said Health and Human Services Bent Høie to news agency NTB and believes that this agreement means that Norway is at the forefront of efforts to improve public health.

The MOU NTB have accessed shall be signed by Høie on behalf of the government and representatives of industry associations, food and beverage manufacturers and food retailers.

The parties have in recent years been sitting together in a business group and working to find a common plan.

It is NHO that has taken the initiative to enter into an agreement to collect all the activities and predictability.

New tastebuds

Step by step, the plan is that an increasing proportion of the population should have a balanced diet in line with government dietary guidelines. Norway will be among the three countries in the world with the highest life expectancy.

– Slightly healthier foods and a little healthier drinks can make big differences for health, says Høie.
