Intestinal bacteria found in sushi shrimp

FSA found intestinal bacteria in prawn from Vietnam when they conducted spot checks on border controls in Oslo. The food thus had to be withdrawn and destroyed.

– We contacted the manufacturer, who took the matter very seriously. We are not happy to have gotten the shrimp with these bacteria, and do not work with the factory anymore, says Anne Mild Midttveit, from Public Affairs at seafood company Lerøy, to newspaper Bergens Tidende.

Lerøy produces sushi in both Bergen and Oslo, and imports include pre-peeled and heat treated ebi shrimp from Vietnam. It was in such prawns the intestinal bacterium “vibrio cholera” was found.

The factory in Vietnam explained Lerøy that a worker in production was sick with diarrhea the day the shrimp were packed, and was therefore sent home from work.

FSA feared that the shrimp that was produced the next day, also contained the bacteria, but it took a number of samples without bacteria being found. They were also reassured by the manufacturer that could demonstrate good practices for washing of the premises these days.
