Imports of meat to Norway doubled from 11,566 tons in 2014 to 22,366 tons last year, figures from the Agriculture Directorate says. Meanwhile the Norwegians’ consumption of meat reached record high levels.
Despite the fact that nutrition advisers believe we should eat less red meat, the Norwegians consumption  of beef increased by 13 percent last year, according to E24. Most of the rise in demand was met by foreign imports.
Three quarters of all meat imported to Norway come from Germany while Botswana and Namibia both are at 7 percent each,
While the proportion of beef is increasing in Norwegian households, the consumption of chicken decreased by 13 percent after the much-publicized use of the antibacterial agent narasin.
Head of the Norwegian Farmers’ Union, Lars Petter Bartnes, argue that the increase in imports means that Norwegian agricultural lose  values in the order of 750 million. This also means that several jobs in factories are lost.
– It is particularly sad for consumers who miss the opportunity to buy good Norwegian meat,  Bartnes says.
