Since its start-up in 1979, the Statfjord oil field has had a profit of over NOK 1,500 billion. In approximately 2025,the entire field will become non-operational.

Equinor has submitted for consultation an impact assessment for the dismantling of Statfjord A, the largest of the platforms according to Stavanger Aftenblad newspaper. By 2022, Statfjord A will be closed down, and it is estimated that Statfjord B and C
will follow by 2025.

Originally, the plan was to close Statfjord A in 1999, but since then, the platform has received major upgrades and extended its lifetime nine times. The entire field has produced and delivered significant values much further and far beyond what was expected,” said Morten Eek, Press Officer in Equinor, to the newspaper.

The oil field was discovered in 1974, and four years later, Statfjord A was opened.Oil production started in 1979. Statfjord B and C were opened in 1981 and 1984 respectively. In 1987, Statoil, currently known as Equinor, took over the role of operator.

The Statfjord field is still good for around 100,000 barrels of oil equivalents daily, according to Stavanger Aftenblad newspaper.Today’s preferable production is gas.
