Norwegian business is taking action to cut plastic packaging

Major Norwegian producers are taking control of getting rid of plastic.Over the next few years, several thousand tons of plastic will disappear from the stores.

 

In March, a proposal for a plastic ban was resigned in parliament,yet the business sector is working hard to cut or reduce plastic consumption wrote Dagsavisen newspaper.

The chain store,Cubus, have started already, when last year they began to charge for plastic bags. Since then, they have reduced consumption by approximately 80%.

Hurtigruten aim to become the world’s first plastic-free shipping company.Already by July the 2nd, everything from straws and pipes to plastic bags will be off the company’s ships. Also, McDonalds have chosen to stop using plastic vacuum tubes in some of its restaurants,and will test out paper straws instead.

In addition, over the next few years, differences will be noted in Norway’s grocery stores. Among other things, the Norgesgruppen plans to reduce the use of plastic by 20% by 2025, and will replace their plastic wrapping for avocado and strawberries to save 100 tons of plastic a year.

According to Fredrik Myhre, Senior Advisor for Fisheries and Marine Environment in WWF, eight million tons of plastic waste is released into the sea every year.
