In September 2011, a 22 year old student from Os won NOK 92.4 million on online games. Now, both the District Court and Court of Appeal have ruled that he has to pay taxes on his winnings.
Students from Os reported his winnings on his tax form , however, he believed that he should not have to pay taxes on it. The IRS was of a different opinion. He therefore paid 28 percent of his winnings in taxes, but appealed the decision to the Upper Tax Jury. However, the jury also ruled that he should pay taxes on his winnings. The district court thought the same, and now he has also lost in Gulating Court of Appeal, according to the newspaper Bergens Tidende.
This means the tax bill of 25 million kroner has to be paid. In addition, he has to pay half of the legal costs of 30,000 kroner. The rest will be paid by the company Betsson.
In Norway only winnings from the various games of Norwegian Tipping are tax exempt.
