Bergen shipping company GC Rieber Shipping layoff 66 seafarer employees and replace those with hired labor.

The company from new year reduce their own staffing, reports Sysla.

– We think it is highly regrettable that the market imposes us on such a move, says operations director Atle Sommer in GC Rieber Shipping.

Bergen shipping company has hitherto manned their ships with crews from the subsidiary GC Rieber Crewing, in addition to hired personnel.

But the New Year is the end of it, and all the 66 who are permanently employed in the nine ships which company operates from Bergen, loses their jobs. 55 of them are Norwegian.

– It is not assumed that we will give severance packages – it is a business that closed down due to a very difficult market, and then we relate to what has been agreed through collective agreement, says Sommer to Sysla.
