Poland is building a pipeline to collect gas from Norway
Poland will become less dependent on Russian gas and has entered into an agreement with Denmark to build a pipeline in the Baltic Sea to collect gas from Norway.
The 900-kilometre pipeline will be completed in October 2022, when Poland’s current contract with Russian Gazprom expires.
‘’It’s a quantum leap for the security and independence of the Polish energy sector,’’ said the country’s prime minister, Mateusz Morawiecki.
The pipeline will transport gas from the Norwegian shelf in the North Sea, via Denmark, the Baltic Sea, the Polish GAZ-SYSTEM SA, and the Danish Energy Authority, SOV announced on Friday that the agreement was in the box.
The pipeline will receive a capacity of up to 10 billion cubic metres of natural gas annually, and the project has received NOK 500 million in support from the EU. The final price is not known.
Two-thirds of Poland’s gas imports come from Gazprom, but the country has decided to relinquish Russia and signed an
agreement on imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the US earlier this month.
In addition to purchasing Norwegian gas, Poland is now also considering importing gas from Qatar.
