The Norwegian branch of Rolls-Royce has signed a contract for the design and ship equipment for two of the new expedition ships to be built for Hurtigruten.

The contract has a value of over 280 million kroner and includes design and equipment packages for two modern expedition ships by Kleven Maritime in Ulsteinvik to be built for Hurtigruten AS. The contract is a solid follow-up to the letter of intent that Hurtigruten and Kleven signed in April of this year.

– The ships that will soon take shape on the docks with Kleven and are sure to turn heads. They will contribute to increased interest in both Norwegian shipbuilding and Hurtigruten as a leader in expedition tourism, says Daniel Skjeldam, CEO of Hurtigruten in a statement.

The vessels are designed by Rolls-Royce and tailored based on experience with expedition travel, but can also sail along the Norwegian coast. The new ships have ice-strengthened hulls, are 140 meters long and can accommodate 530 passengers.

Hurtigruten has focused heavily on adventure tourism in the Arctic and Antarctic. The new expedition ships are to use new environmental technology solutions.

– Hurtigruten and Kleven has agreed to build these ships that will set a new standard in the market, and now it is our mission to contribute innovative technology, design and equipment, says Helge Gjerde, director of Rolls-Royce.

The First ship will be completed in July 2018, the other ship in July 2019. Kleven Maritime has options for two additional vessels.
