Early Tuesday statoil started drilling on the first of a total of 35 production wells on the Johan Sverdrup field.
The wells will constitute the first phase of the development. The drilling that started exactly midnight was done from the drilling rig Deepsea Atlantic.
In the first phase, a series of production wells drilled in a drilling frame at 2808 tonnes which were installed in August last year. This installation makes it possible to start production at the vast oil field even before the permanent platform is put in place in 2018.
– Pre-drilling makes it possible to utilize the production capacity of the field as efficiently as possible when we start the production late in 2019. This way we will maximize the value of the field from day one, said Kjetel Thick project director Johan Sverdrup in Statoil.
A total of eight wells are to be drilled through the drilling frame, before the rig moves to drill injection wells at three other places on the field.
Johan Sverdrup field is one of the largest discoveries on the Norwegian Continental Shelf since the mid-1980s. It may contain between 1.8 and 2.9 billion barrels of oil equivalent. 95 percent of this oil. The production is expected to begin in 2019, with Statoil as operator.
