Statoil plans to cut 250 jobs from their central administration –  many of them related to health, safety and the environment.

According to Dagens Næringsliv, up to 150 staff working with health, safety and the environment in the department SSU (Safety and Sustainability) can be cut, in addition to around 100 staff  in finance and accounting functions.

Furthermore, an unknown number of positions in our Global Business Support will be outsourced.

It was Statoil chief Eldar Sætre who announced  the cost reductions of the Johan Sverdrup development at the ONS event in Stavanger on Monday .

He says to the newspaper that the cuts include simplification of the processes which can provide opportunities to increase safety in the company.

A total of  800 people work at the SSU department. A downsizing of 250 means that 20 percent of the staff who work with safety, may vanish.

Per Martin Labråthen  who is deputy head of the trade union Industri Energi, is however concerned and believes that downsizing may affect safety, not least in relation to offshore installations and onshore facilities.
