Water damage costing over two billion per year

Every nine minutes, water damage occurs in private homes and cottages, according to figures from Finans Norge. So far this year, insurers have paid over two billion in compensation for such damage. They have also registered over 50,000 cases of water damage, 14 percent more than at the same time last year.

Much of the increase is due to damage caused by heavy rainfall. For example, a large number of homeowners had their cellars flooded with water.

‘It is far more likely they will get water damage to their homes, than that they’ll be exposed to a burglary. Not all water damage can be avoided, but we can help ourselves by preparing’, says communications manager Stine Neverdal of Finans Norge.

She reminds us that it is important to shut off the water before one is absent from cabins and houses for extended periods of time.

In the third quarter of this year, claims were 31 percent higher than for the same period last year, and in fact were at the highest level ever.
