More young people go unemployed in Southern Europe

Every third Italian aged 20- 24 either works or studies. Unemployment has risen sharply in southern European countries.

In ten years the proportion of Italians aged 20- 24 who are neither studying or in employment has risen from 21.6 percent to 31.1 percent.

an analysis  by the EU statistics agency Eurostat was presented in front of the United Nations International Youth Day Friday.

There are countries in southern Europe  which have the highest unemployment rate among young people. In Greece, 26.1 percent of young people aged 20- 24 years are neither in education or employment. In Croatia, the share is 24.2 percent, in Romania 24.1 per cent, in Bulgaria 24.0 percent and Spain 22.2 percent.

The proportion has increased strongest in Italy, Greece and Spain, the three countries have all been strongly affected by the economic crisis.

In countries like Germany and Sweden developments have however gone the opposite way.

Cumulatively 17.3 per cent of young people aged 20- 24 are with no work or studies in the EU. The proportion is 1 percentage point higher than ten years ago.
