Foreign Ministry was notified Sunday morning that Tjostolf Moland's death.
Circumstances of death is still unclear.
- He was found dead in his prison cell in Kinshasa this morning. Our thoughts and condolences go now to his immediate family and relatives. A representative of the Foreign Service immediately went to prison in Kinshasa as we were notified, said Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide (Labour) at a press conference Sunday evening.
Norwegian authorities have long been trying to get into a prison transfer of the two prisoners. Foreign Ministry sent a proposal for an extradition agreement Moland and French to Congolese authorities over a year ago.
The representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is now following up the case against the prison and also the situation for Joshua French, who are still imprisoned in Kinshasa.
- It is tragic that the case has received such an outcome for Tjostolf Moland, says Eide.
He would not comment on the cause of death. An independent doctor and the lawyer has been involved in the case Sunday, said the Foreign Minister.
He warns that we will now add "Full Print" on the Congolese authorities, who have not responded to formal requests from either foreign-owned, UK Foreign Secretary William Hague and Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg.
- We will show that this case is now more than tragic enough, and that it is incumbent Congolese authorities a great responsibility to bring answers to the inquiries we've sent.
Working full time
Eide stressed that he would not rule out that the Norwegian authorities could have done more in the case.
- I think it's very important not to say that you've done all you can, because you should always ask yourself that question. What I can say is that there is no comparable case, very many here at the house have been working full time on this, we have had many contacts and we have also worked closely with contacts in Congo without success. These are things we have done, but I would not say that there are things we could have done differently.
