King Carl XVI Gustaf will Sunday celebrate his 40 years as Sweden's regent. According to him, it was a nervous 27-year-old who gained the throne when his grandfather died in 1973.

As Carl Gustaf's father, Prince Gustaf Adolf, died in a plane crash in 1947,then the 27-year-old prince king took over when the old king Gustaf VI Adolf died in 1973, 90 years old.

40th anniversary will be celebrated with fanfare in Sweden Sunday, including the cobblestone ball in the courtyard of the Royal Castle. Saturday night was the royal family are guests when the government led by Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt at the helm invited to the gala dinner on the occasion of the anniversary.
