Over 1,000 migrants rescued in the Mediterranean

1022 migrants were rescued in the Mediterranean from Sunday to Monday and among them 16 people were found dead, according to the Italian Coast Guard.

791 migrants rescued in the Mediterranean on Sunday in nine different rescue operations, while 231 were rescued in four different operations on Monday.

The Coast Guard performed these operations in a very rough weather conditions when the relief ship Aquarius was carrying 353 survivors and two dead women to Trapani in western part of the Sicily island.

So far this year, 173,000 migrants come ashore in Italy, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM). Meanwhile, 4,715 died or are missing since 1st of January 2016.
