At least 19 of 22 people on board were killed when a Mil Mi-8 transport helicopter crashed in the Jamal peninsula in northern Siberia according to News Agency Tass, quoting local government sources.

One survivor guided rescuers to the crash site after alerting emergency services by phone. He was flown to hospital, while the two survivors with life-threatening injuries were treated on site.

The Mil Mi-8 helicopter has been upgraded several times since it was introduced in the Soviet Union nearly 50 years ago. It is used by both civilian and military operators in several countries.
