28 prisoners sent to prisons in their home countries

During the first half of this year there were 28 foreign nationals transferred from Norwegian prisons to prisons in their respective countries, slightly fewer than in the same period last year.

According to figures from Correctional Services Directorate (KDI), which is responsible for the processing of atonement transfer cases.

In the same period last year there was 33 inmates sent home, and during the whole of last year, a total of 63 inmates were transferred to prisons in their home countries. It gave Norway a savings of more than 41,000 incarcerated days, wrotes Correctional Services in a statement.

In addition to the 28 people in the first half of this year, it issued a decision on repatriation of an additional 13 inmates in Norwegian prisons. At the same time last year this figure was eight inmates.

Of those who were incarcerated and transferred in the first half of this year ten were from Lithuania, seven from Romania, four from Poland, two from the Netherlands and one from respectively Estonia, Germany, Great Britain, Albania and France.

KDI estimates that the number of incarcerated transfers for the whole year this year will be about the same as for last year.
