The well-known asylum lawyer, Arild Humlen, received criticism from the Bar Association disciplinary committee after he forwarded a letter concerning ‘final rejection’ and a departure deadline from the government to a family from Jordan.
The disciplinary committee criticized Humlen after the family Jarre, who lived in Lister24.no., received the refusal of stay by the Norwegian authorities.
Thus, they missed support for voluntary return of up to 155,000 kroner, reported Lister24.no. Humlen sent the reply to the family’s application to the wrong address.
The committee believes the lawyer should have ensured that his clients had received the letters concerning Utlendingsnemnda’s (UNE’s) decision and departure deadline.
According to the disciplinary committee, ‘In the present case, it is a crucial fact that two letters of absolutely central importance for the lawyer’s clients, were not disclosed by the lawyer to the client in a timely manner’.
The family was sent from Norway on the night of the 5th November. The day before, they had sent in their application for funding for assisted voluntary return. Because they were already leaving the country, the application was denied.
‘I don’t agree with the committee’s decision and affirm my view. It isn’t yet decided whether the decision will be appealed’, wrote Humlen in a brief comment to Lister24.no.
