Bodø will be able to apply to be the European Capital of Culture in 2024. The EU commission has decided.

– “Congratulations to all of Bodø, Nordland and Northern Norway. This week has proved that when we stand together, we win,” says the city Mayor of Bodø, Ida Pinnerød (Ap) in a press release.

Thursday it became clear, that the jury of the EU commission has prequalified Bodø’s application to become the European Capital of Culture in 2024. It is clear that they are still in the running when the winner will be revealed in the second half of 2019. Bodø is competing with Banja Luka og Mostar, which both are located in Bosnia and Hercegovina.

In 2024 there will also be two other European Culture cities – one from Estonia and one from Austria.

– “Throughout the application process we have laid good foundations for a large lift in Culture functions and activities in Nordland. Now, we are going to raise our sleeves and continue the hard work. Nordland’s County Council’s role is to over see all of Nordland, and ensure that Northern Norway is taking advantage of this wonderful opportunity. This is a joyous day for all who are concerned with the culture of society,” says county council for culture, environment and public health, Aase Refsnes (SV).

Earlier this year it was obvious that the Culture Minister, Trine Skei Grande (V) did not want to allocate money to Bodø for the application to be a Culture Capital.

European Culture Capitals: Bergen was awarded the Honor in 2000, and Stavanger and Sandnes was in 2008.
