Kjell Magne Bondevik is in Myanmar where he met Tuesday the country’s leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
During the meeting Suu Kyi stressed that there is continuous consultation with ethnic minorities with the aim of a comprehensive national peace accord.
– It is important that the Norwegian and the international community still supports the ongoing peace process, Bondevik says in a statement.
There is still fighting between various armed groups and government forces in the states of Kachin, Shan and Karen.
– This is not a peace process but a conflict process, said an observer recently to news magazine Irrawaddy.org.
According to the Swedish journalist and author Bertil Lintner the peace process has gone astray. He believes there is a need for an entirely new approach to succeed.
During the meeting Bondevik and Suu Kyi also spoke about the plight of the Muslim Rohingya minority in the west of the country.
Suu Kyi emphasized to Bondevik that there are extremists who do not want normalization, and she believed that “Western media and government are not always fair in their account of the situation.”
