There may be changes with Donald Trump. But the real-time distinction in security policy has already taken place, says Foreign Minister Børge Brende.
Since 2013, the security situation has gradually become more difficult, said the Foreign Minister.
Russia has become more unpredictable and have used military force to destabilize and take part of Ukraine, violent extremism has become widespread, IS has emerged, fragile states have become more unstable, and terror has moved closer.
Meanwhile, populism, nationalism and protectionism is on the rise.
– That is what represents a new era, says Brende to news agency NTB.
– The slightly kinder world that we became accustomed to after the Cold War and through the 90s, is now replaced by a more unpredictable security policy picture, he says.
On Tuesday, Brende is meeting his counterparts from other NATO countries with Foreign Ministers in Brussels.
Anonymous says NATO diplomats are uncertain over what is in store when Donald Trump takes over as president of the United States, but Brende says he is reassured after having been in conversations with key people in Trumps transition team when he visited the United States last week.
– There can always be changes in policy by replacing administration. I think we have to wait and see, he said.
