Foreign Minister Børge Brende will visit the West African country Liberia on Thursday, where he will attend the opening of a Norwegian-funded hydropower plant.

– If we are going to help create growth and development, access to electricity is crucial, says Brende.

– With the opening of the Mount Coffee hydropower plant, more than one hundred thousand households in Liberia will be connected to power in the future.

That means more light for student homework, streetlights providing safety and access to energy for businesses that invest in new jobs, he said.

Norway has supported the energy sector in Liberia with nearly NOK 1 billion and the Foreign Minister believes that this is a concrete example of how aid produces results.

Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf will also participate in hydropower plant opening ceremony.
