Norway endorses the proposal for a new international protection force in South Sudan’s capital, in addition to a stronger mandate for the UN force in the country, said Foreign Minister Børge Brende.

Fighting continues in the civil war-torn country, and Brende believe it is necessary to increase international efforts.

The UN Security Council has adopted a resolution to extend the UN peacekeeping operation in southern Sudan, United Nations Mission in South Sudan, until 12 August to negotiate other measures and a new force in the country.

It is expected that arms embargos and sanctions will be against those responsible for the violence.

– The Security Council must adopt targeted sanctions and arms embargo, as UN Secretary-General has requested, says Brende. As with neighboring countries and the African Union, Norway condemns the violence that erupted on July 8 in the capital Juba.
