Burka ban approved by Congress in Netherlands

A ban on using garment covering the face in public areas, approved by the lower house of parliament in the Netherlands.

A large majority voted for the proposal in the democratically meeting on Tuesday.

The ban includes solid Islamic garments burka and nikab and shall apply on schools, hospitals and government buildings. As a part of this decision wearing of finland caps and helmets that cover the face will also be prohibited.

The proposal must also be approved by the upper house of parliament before it comes into force. It is estimated that only a few hundred women wear the burqa or nikab in the Netherlands.
