The national ID cards and new passports will not come until mid-2018 after being delayed several times.

The reason for the recent postponement has also been defined as new safety requirements and that the production of ID cards has been just tendered, written in DinSide.

– Especially safety has resulted in the acquisition has taken longer than planned. Also EU legislation on eID has taken longer to establish than expected, said police inspector and the project owner in the Police Directorate John Kristian Thoresen.

The plan was to make it possible to obtain ID cards from 1 January 2013 but since then there have been many delays.

ID card can be used as travel documents and identification within the entire Schengen area, so in principle you will not need a passport except cases for traveling outside Schengen.

The first proposals for national ID cards came in 2007.
